Port Clinton, Ohio - There's a lot that goes into winning a national title at NRA's Rifle & Pistol Championships in Camp Perry, Ohio. There's time, practice, dedication, and discipline. What also helps, when battling the wind, pressure and heat, is a little bit of natural talent.

"I started shooting smallbore rifles last September," said Virginia "Ginny" Thrasher, winner of NRA's High Intermediate Junior with Metallic Sights title. "But I've been shooting for almost two years."

Second NRA championship in three years for Olympian McPhail

2013 NRA Smallbore Rifle Prone Champion SSG Michael McPhail of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit

Port Clinton, Ohio - Only two points shy of a perfect score, SSG Michael McPhail of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit won the 2013 NRA National Smallbore Prone Championship with a 4798 out of 4800. McPhail, who has previously won the coveted Critchfield Trophy in 2011, was absent from last year's National Matches due to competing the London 2012 Summer Olympics as a member of Team USA.

Held July 20-25 at Camp Perry, a National Guard training facility on the shore of Lake Erie, the Smallbore Rifle Prone Championships are a part of the annual NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships. Known in the shooting community as the "World Series of the shooting sports," the National Matches have been a staple of Camp Perry for 106 years.

Rifleman return to Camp Perry with a mission to beat America

Port Clinton, Ohio - Fifteen members of the Great Britain Rifle Team descended upon the Viale Range at Camp Perry this week in preparation for the John J. Pershing Trophy Match. Sporting red team shirts and a touch of British swagger, they're lead by by a man known as Jon Leech. A veteran of the sport, Leech is there to share his decades of experience to this new group of hopefuls.

"They're not juniors, though some have taken a while to mature," he said with a laugh. "But they're bringing with them a lot of experience."

Port Clinton, Ohio - You've heard the start of this story before — mom didn't like guns. But with four boys running around and a father who didn't see the harm, she knew her days were numbered. Instead of battening down the hatches, she went another direction.

"Mom came up with the idea of sending us to a weekend long NRA Hunter Safety Course," said Spc. Joseph Hall of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. "That's when we discovered if we do it safe then it's even more fun. After we joined the junior shoot team ... there was no stopping us."

Returns to Camp Perry after drive to Olympics for Smallbore Rifle title

Joseph Hall smiling during the NRA Smallbore 3-Position Rifle Championship Port Clinton, Ohio - With a final score of 2383-171x, Specialist Joseph Hall of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit captured the 2013 NRA Smallbore 3-Position Rifle title in Camp Perry, Ohio. Besting fellow U.S. Army Marksmanship teammate Jason Parker by a total of three points, this is Hall's first overall title at the National Championships.

"For me this was one of my come back matches," said Hall.

Though from a family rich in the shooting tradition, despite mom's initial objections, Hall stepped away from behind the trigger and started working a "big boy job". It didn't take. Soon enough, his desire to get out on the field was too great to ignore. There was still something left to prove.

Missing early secures rifle win at NRA Nationals in Camp Perry

Competitors for the Any Sight Prone Championships shoot off set their targets at Camp Perry

Port Clinton, Ohio - The first match of the day gave way to the last match of the day here at the NRA National Smallbore 3-Position Championships in Camp Perry. The first match, shooting from the prone position with any sight, ended in three way perfection. For not only were three shooters tied for first, they were tied with a perfect score of 400-40x (the x stands for bullseyes).

"Not something you see every year," said Match Director H.Q. Moody. "Not something you see for a lot of years."
