From the Nevada Department of Wildlife - Nevada's Big Game Tag Application Opens

big-game-tag-app-open-sm Reno, Nevada - If you’re interested in hunting big game in Nevada this year, the Nevada Department of Wildlife wants to remind everyone that the big game tag application process opens today, Monday, March 23.

Hunters have an array of hunts; mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, mountain goat, black bear and three species of bighorn sheep (Desert, California and Rocky Mountain), to choose from. Deer, elk and antelope offer options for male or female of each species, as well as several options for weapon type including rifle, archery and muzzleloader.

Again this year, NDOW is offering some combination hunt options that allow sportsmen, hunting in predetermined areas, the chance of hunting a cow elk simultaneous to hunting a mule deer, and one that allows sportsmen the chance to hunt a cow elk while also hunting bull elk.

Surprising Julie Golob at SHOT Show 2015 in Las Vegas
Surprising Julie Golob at the 2015 SHOT Show in Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nevada - You'll be hard pressed to find a better shooter out there than Smith & Wesson Captain Julie Golob. After eight years in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, she's gone on to win multiple national championships and titles including NRA's Bianchi Cup as well as all of USPSA's division.

All of this while wrangling a pair of ankle bitters back in Kansas City. And if you're a parent, or an aunt/uncle, you have to wonder which is tougher - keeping up with the kids or keeping up with the bullseyes.

Now while I'm sure you're dying to hear about the wonders of parenthood, I'm heading in a different direction this afternoon. We're just going to ask her one question. A three part question. What was her first gun, last gun, and plans for the next gun.

Las Vegas, Nevada - If you wandered about halfway down the line of SHOT Show’s Media Day at the Range then you probably happened upon the Aimpoint booth. As popular a stop as any other, the crew on hand was eager to show off their latest piece of engineering ingenuity - the Micro T-2.

“We changed the geometry of design for enhanced optical performance,” Aimpoint rep Keith Weaver explained. “What that means you can see the red dot more clearly, especially when using the 3-x magnifier.

"We also added front and rear protective flip covers, more protection for the adjustment turrets, and a lot more. Want to give it a try?"

Always on Target Short Range Training Ammunition at SHOT Show

Las Vegas, Nevada - There was so much to see last week during SHOT Show’s Media Day at the Range. Lost in a plethora of rifles, pistols, and shotguns were a few jewels just waiting to be discovered. One we happened upon, and were dazzled by, was from General Dynamics Ordanance and Tactical System; the Always on Target Short Range Training Ammunition (SRTA).

“It has the characteristics as a ball round at a reduced, maximum range,” explained Business Development Manager Ruben Regalado. “So you can do a lot of the training you would do with a ball round with no fear of overflight.”

The final days of SHOT Show in Vegas and the work ahead

The NRA booth at SHOT Show 2015 in Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada - The doors to SHOT Show closed around 4pm Friday. The once bustling hallways jammed to the gills with carts, stand ups, and every imaginable version of humanity slowly deconstructed into a waif-like facsimile of an old west ghost town. Booths were broken down, products boxed away, and the remaining inhabitants shanties about like extras from The Walking Dead.

Show veterans properly prepped for the week operated at about 80% efficiency. Rookies, especially that ignored the warnings, were lucky to the 50 mark. You could see it in their eyes. Recovery would take some time.

A quick update from a past-California Rifle & Pistol Association President

Las Vegas, Nevada - It's difficult to miss Tony Montanarella when he enters a room. The square-jawed quasi-hulking California boy taking each step with a deliberate smile he just can't help but deliver. And why not? Things are going well for the past-president of the California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA).

"We've got some big plans in mind for 2015, our Year of the Veteran," said Montanarella.

The newlywed Anaheim Police Department Sergeant is fresh on the heels of a success stint as the CRPA President. But that doesn't mean it's time to slow down.

"There's never time to rest on our laurels. We're always doing our best for the membership and fight the good fight in California."
