NRA signs on to sponsor NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in April

The NRA 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway Fort Worth, Texas - Earlier this week, Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage announced that the National Rifle Association has agreed to serve as title sponsor for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the speedway later this year. Now known as the NRA 500, the race will take place on April 13.

"The NRA has been involved in the sport for several years and a partner of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., for many years in various aspects, and this race entitlement is just another extension of that business relationship," Gossage said in a news release. "I suspect we’ll sell a lot of tickets to their members and folks who support their position on America’s rights and freedoms and the Second Amendment."

Salt Lake City, Utah - On Saturday, February 23rd, NRA Executive Vice President addressed the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City. The following is Mr. LaPierre's response to call for Universal Background Checks:

I know that you, as gun owners and NRA members, deeply care about our Second Amendment freedom in the United States. The Second Amendment is not just words on parchment. It was not a frivolous “suggestion” from our Founding Fathers to be interpreted according to whim. It lies at the very heart of what this country was founded upon. Our Founding Fathers knew that without the Second Amendment, all of our other freedoms could be in jeopardy. Our individual freedoms — that we have as American citizens — are the very essence of America. They are what make America unique.

NRA's National School Shield Emergency Response Program

Wayne LaPierre announces the NRA's National School Shield Emergency Response Program The National Rifle Association's 4 million mothers, fathers, sons and daughters join the nation in horror, outrage, grief and earnest prayer for the families of Newtown, Connecticut … who suffered such incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime. Out of respect for those grieving families, and until the facts are known, the NRA has refrained from comment. While some have tried to exploit tragedy for political gain, we have remained respectfully silent.

Now, we must speak … for the safety of our nation's children. Because for all the noise and anger directed at us over the past week, no one — nobody — has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works?

The only way to answer that question is to face up to the truth. Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk. How have our nation's priorities gotten so far out of order? Think about it. We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses — even sports stadiums — are all protected by armed security.

We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers.
