On March 10, 2013, North Liberty Iowa Police Department officers were dispatched to a 911 domestic violence call. The caller heard screaming and witnessed a male jumping on a woman’s car and yelling. It was not their first call to this address.

Approaching the mobile home, officers located a woman, crying, with obvious signs of being assaulted. She was in the process of moving out when her boyfriend attacked. She informed the officers that her boyfriend had planned to remove his pistol from the trailer earlier in the day. He should be alone in the trailer.

Officers made their way up a ramp leading to the front door. There was little room to maneuver. Soon they made contact.

From the Iowa Department of Natural Resources - Iowa Receives $3 Million for Habitat and Hunter Access Program

Iowa Habitat and Access Program Des Moines, Iowa - Landowners and hunters will benefit from a recent announcement that Iowa will receive $3 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to expand the Iowa Habitat and Access Program (IHAP). The announcement came from U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in August as part of a $20 million allocation to 10 states.

The DNR’s Iowa Habitat and Access Program provides landowners with financial assistance to improve habitat. In return, participating landowners agree to open those lands for public hunting.

According to Kelly Smith, private lands program coordinator, the DNR will use the grant to enhance 22,000 acres with improvements such as grass seeding, tree and shrub plantings, food plots, timber stand improvements and wetland restorations.

“We’ve seen growing demand by hunters for more public access, and by landowners for more habitat improvement opportunities,” said Smith. “This grant will more than triple the number of acres enrolled in the program.”

A whitetail deer that got away - image courtesy of American Hunter magazine Des Moines, Iowa - The first case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild Iowa deer has been confirmed.

The deer was reported as harvested in Allamakee County during the first shotgun season in early December. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is currently working to obtain as much information as possible about the infected deer to implement its CWD response plan.

“We have been testing for CWD in Iowa’s deer herd for more than a decade and are optimistic, given the extensive data we have collected, that we have caught this early,” said Chuck Gipp, DNR director.
