BAGLEY TWP. – A dessert potluck Saturday honored Micki Morin as Northland Sportsmen’s Club’s 2018 Sportswoman of the Year.

Morin, of Gaylord, is a member of the club’s board and chairs its Women on Target program, a ladies-only shooting clinic that’s held twice a year and introduces dozens of women to the shooting sports.

She’s also vice-president of the North Ohio Elementary PTO and recently began working as a teacher aide for the schools. She is married and has three daughters.

Her involvement with the club began as a student of a Women on Target event a few years ago. Kay Pagel, the former chair of the workshop, handed the reigns over to Morin in the spring of 2017 after getting it going in 2013.

Morin has since become a regular shooter at the club, rubbing elbows with many of its longtime members.

One of those is Jim Yeoman, a club veteran whom Morin calls her “buddy.” Yeoman helps Morin obtain grant funding from the National Rifle Association for her shooting workshop.

“She’s pleasant to know and is a hard worker,” Yeoman said. “Everybody seems to like her. I think she’s going to get Women on Target really going.”

Nadia Kidder, the 2017 recipient, presented Morin with the honor, given to recognize commitment to firearms safety, sportsmanship and citizenship. The club has presented the honor since 2001 (see list of recipients).

Kidder also served as guest speaker and gave a short presentation on the Otsego County Mounted Division, of which she is a member, and the state’s annual Pony Express fundraiser.

Donning her personalized Sportswoman of the Year jacket and holding her plaque, Morin smiled big as she gave a brief thank-you to the club.

“I’m really happy to be here,” she said. “I love being part of the club, Women on Target, and everything we do around here. I’ve met some amazing people and volunteers, and we couldn’t do this without them.”
