Being the son of the wealthiest woman on Wall Street may have had its perks. Col. Edward Green acquired the largest personal yacht of the day in 1917 and immediately set about Improving it even further.
Perhaps the best addition to his seagoing yacht “United States” was a battery of fine Colt pistols and Winchester rifles. To counteract aquatic corrosion, each of the firearms was carefully plated in gold. A total of four Colts and seven Winchesters comprised the defensive capabilities of the yacht against any pirates roving nearby harbors. Sadly, within sixteen months, the vessel sank with little of its appointments salvaged – except for its armaments.
