NRA Foundation Awards Grants to Champion Trap Team

WATERLOO, Ill. – The Waterloo High School trap team in Waterloo, Illinois, has received nearly $25,000 in NRA Foundation grants from 2010 to 2015, allowing for the purchase of numerous supplies and training materials.

Better known as the Lead Heads, the WHS trap team consists of 20 young men and women who are members of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and the Amateur Trapshooters Association (ATA). In 2014 the team combined to break 981 out of 1,000 clays and took first place at the AIM Grand Championship in Sparta, Illinois.

“The main goal of the Lead Heads is to provide a safe and enjoyable sport for the young men and women in our area,” says Head Coach A.J. Wessel. “Gun safety is emphasized to the team as our main objective. Once proper gun safety is observed, the coach focuses on improving shooting ability and overall scores.”

The Lead Heads have shown their appreciation for The NRA Foundation’s support by volunteering at local Friends of NRA events and seeing firsthand the hard work and passion of the volunteers who dedicate time to raise money for shooting sports programs just like theirs.
