Callers from Maryland and Pennsylvania dominate Great American game calling contest

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - Tradition continued yesterday afternoon as almost 40 competitors gathered in the Erie Room of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center for the 2014 Great American Outdoor Show Mallard Duck & Canadian Goose calling contest. With only ten seconds allowed to warm up those vocal cords, it was a tense situation from the word go.

"We had a few anxious young men step up on the stage," said NRA Hunter Services Manager and contest organizer Bob Davis. "But once they started they did fine, they all did just fine."

A long treasured tradition at the Harrisburg Outdoor Show, the game calling contest requires competitors to include specific species in their medleys. Though allowed to add other species to the mix, additional calls are not required. Rules also stipulate that only manufactured calls or the natural mouth may be used during the session. In other words — no electronic or computer-aided calling allowed.

There to judge the whoops, yaps, hoots and hollers was a stout collection of game calling professionals. That list included Sean Mann from Sean Mann Outdoors, veteran hunter Michael Luzier from Clarksburg, Maryland, Foiles Straight Meat's Jeff Foiles, as well as Client Craine and Curtis Arnold from Sure Shot Game Calls.

Winners of the Canadian Goose Call Contest at the Great American Outdoor Show

Taking top prize in the Canadian Goose Calling Challenge was Bo Matherly of Earleville, Maryland. Matherly finished 11 points ahead of 2nd place finisher Tom Bryce with a score of 832 out of a possible 900. For the Mallard Duck Calling Challenge, it was Tom Bryce who returned to take the title with a final score of 805.

"Bryce is a very nice young man," said Davis. "Comes from the heart of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Taking first in one category and second in the other, now that's a boy I want to go hunting with."

NRA's Mallard Duck and Canada Goose Calling Contest is the second of three game calling contest scheduled for the show. The Elk contest, scheduled for earlier today, was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Currently there are no plans to reschedule.
