Buyers come from as far away as South Carolina and Buffalo for hunting, hiking and outdoor deals
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - Lines outside the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center stretched around every available corner as people anxiously awaited the opening of the Great American Outdoor Show. Run this year by National Rifle Association, the Great American Outdoor Show is the largest outdoor show in the nation.
"After last year's show got cancelled, we wanted to get a jump on the show this year," said Peter from Hersey.
With his camo-clad eight year-old son in tow, Peter came in pursuit of two very specific items.
"I need a new set waders and I need a new coat. Someone left my last set outside without asking."
Giving his son that "I told you so" look, the two headed through the Maclay Street lobby door in search of apparel.
Gene, a whitetail enthusiast from Sweet Valley, arrived with other ambitions.
"I want to see what the big shops have," Gene told us. "Smith & Wesson, Remington, Marlin and Colt. I bet I'm going to see more than what they got down at Piestrak's."
Lines dissipated within 45 minutes of the 9:00am opening, swallowed by the cavernous Farm Show Complex's 650,000 worth of retail, seminar and exhibition space. Peter and his boy headed for the nearest clothing booths while Gene and his cohorts focused on the Shooting Sports Hall. Boating, Archery and the Outfitter halls appear to have fared well too.
"It's great to be back," said Greg Samms of Lake Douglas Outfitters. "We've been coming to Harrisburg for seven years, missing last year of course because of the cancellation, but we're back, we've got a new spot, and we've already booked a couple of hunts."
That's exactly what we want to hear.
The Great American Outdoor Shows runs from February 1 through February 9. Located at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center, it's the perfect place to prepare for you 2014 outdoor adventures.
