Top International NPSC shooter Manthei comes to Vegas for a look at ammunition
Las Vegas, Nevada - Who did I come across while running through the makeshift lanes of the Sands Expo Center here at SHOT Show than Axel. Not the uniquely gifted lead singer Axl Rose of the quasi-defunct rock band Guns and Roses. No this Axel was Axel Manthei. Who is Axel Manthei? I'm glad you asked.
Axel is a cop. A German cop. A German cop who makes the trip out to Albuquerque, New Mexico every September for NRA's National Police Shooting Championship. Though he has yet to walk away with the overall title, Axel usually finds his way onto a leaderboard or two once the competition comes to a close. So yes, Axel is a pretty good shot.
But he's more than that.
Axel also happens to be a pretty darn good writer. So much so that Caliber magazine asked him to take a look at the latest innovations in ammunition at this year's SHOT Show. Quite the nod given that such an assignment comes along with airfare from Kaufering, Germany to Vegas. Talk about confidence.
After catching up on Johann, Ursuala, and the rest of the German National Police Shooting Championship team, I had to ask. What caught his eye? What was tickling his fancy. Better yet, what would tell the readers of Caliber
magazine about the ammunition related options on display here at SHOT Show.
He came up with two.
"Boberg Arms is using a unique rifling system designed to cut back on recoil. You should also look at Haendler & Natermann. Their ammunition helps shooters set records all over the world.
"But that's all I'm going to say. The rest is up to you. I can't make your job too easy."
With a laugh and a handshake he disappeared back into the crowd. Though that may be the last we saw of Axel here at the 2014 SHOT Show, I'm sure we'll be able to find him again once the National Police Shooting Championships come around.
Then again, you can never tell where Axel will show up next.
