NRA's grassroots fundraising program for the shooting sports eclipses 2012 effort

Kings County Friends of NRA's original committee

Fairfax, Virginia - Finishing off my list for the top stories of 2014, there is no doubt that that honor should go to Friends of NRA. Formed in 1992, Friends of NRA has been raising money in support of shooting sports programs all over the country for 21 years. They've made my lists before, and they've made it again for having yet another record-setting year.

If it seems like Friends of NRA is always breaking records that's because they are. Each year the grassroots fundraising juggernaut manages to blow through the previous year's numbers. And there are no signs of slowing down.

In the coming years there's no telling how fast they will grow. And as they grow, so do our efforts to pass on our shooting sports cultural heritage.

This year, Friends of NRA held nearly 1,100 banquets across the United States. It was nearly a 30% improvement over 2012, the previous record year and whose number was passed in September. The money raised will go a long way to assist Americans in enjoying the shooting sports on local, state, and national levels. Friends of NRA sports lifetime numbers of 2.8 million attendees hosted at 16,000 events, raising more than $230 million for The NRA Foundation, the charitable organization responsible for grant funding of shooting sports programs.

An program this widespread and so deeply involved in communities requires a lot of help, and Friends of NRA is no different. The thousands of hardworking volunteers who devote time and effort to putting on events are the number one reason the program does so well.

“The success of this year’s Friends of NRA banquets would not have been possible without the hard work of our incredibly dedicated volunteers and attendees,” said Sarah Budi, Director of Volunteer Fundraising. “Our success is a direct result of their efforts and the reason 2013 has been a record breaking year. Thanks to our supporters, the future continues to look bright for the shooting sports.”

The NRA sends out a warm thanks to the volunteers, NRA Field Representatives, sponsors, and attendees who make Friends of NRA the great program it is today. The 2014 season has just begun, and we expect to see Friends of NRA a year from now on yet another list for yet another record-breaking year - and that's a good thing.
