William Shank is Friends of NRA's Eastern Region Volunteer of the Year

Friends of NRA Eastern Region Volunteer of the Year William Shank

Fairfax, Virginia - Receiving a Friends of NRA Area Volunteer of the Year award is a great honor among the thousands of people who lend their time to the grassroots fundraising organization. Even greater still is to be named a Region Volunteer of the Year. These individuals are chosen from the pool of Area recipients by senior NRA staff for their exceptional contributions - a best of the best if you will.

NRAblog will be highlighting the winners from the five Friends of NRA regions - Eastern, Central, Mid West, Southern, Western - beginning with the Eastern region's William Shank.

Shank, who lives in Charleston, West Virginia, has been a member of the Midland Trail Friends of NRA committee for 17 years. Created in 1993, Midland Trail has hosted 7,833 attendees and raised $690,000 through its two decades. Last year's banquet featured 539 guests and brought in $60,000. Bill raised over $12,500 during the 2012 banquet season through the sale of banquet tickets, sponsorships, underwriting and collecting donations.

“Bill and Wanda attended 9 out of the 12 West Virginia banquets in 2012. They're encouraging and helpful to the newer and younger committees and are always a welcome sight at every event they attend," Jim Kilgore, Senior NRA Field Rep, West Virginia. "Bill exemplifies what it means to be a Friends of NRA volunteer."

Being a Friends of NRA volunteer truly is a year-round effort for Bill, who visits about 10 gun clubs and 20 gun shows throughout the state to promote Friends of NRA, NRA programs and the Putnam Gun Club Junior Smallbore Team, where he has been a coach and trainer for the past decade. His dedication to youth in West Virginia is unquestionable. Bill has not only been the lead teacher at the Putnam Gun Club's Youth Day for 17 years, but he has run the .22 range at the Stonewall Jackson State Park for National Hunting and Fishing Days for 15 years. Boy Scouts across West Virginia know Bill as the best instructor for earning their BB gun merit badge.
