Women on Target Rifle Clinic Turns out a Fun Maryland Crowd

Ladies taking full advantage of a Maryland Women on Target class Up in Maryland, Jennifer Dukes spends her days as a mom, a wife and an NRA Certified Instructor. After a little coaxing, Jenny agreed to share some of her instructing experience from a Women on Target program last weekend.

Marriotsville, Maryland - Early morning on April 13, women began filing in to the classroom at Monumental Rifle and Pistol Club. They were there to learn how to shoot. Many of the ladies arrived with little to no experience; this would be their first real exposure to the shooting sports.

The classroom instruction portion started with basic gun safety and continued on to explore the parts and components of common rifles. Range safety and rules were covered as well. Before Lead Instructor Patty West completed her lessons, the women were shown a variety of ammunition — everything from dummy rounds to empty casings — so that everyone could get a feel for the different calibers of ammunition. After all the questions were answered, it was time to hit the range.

It was when our ladies filed out to the range that the real fun began. Each women was assigned a coach (many of whom were also women) to guide them through the first steps to taking their first shots. For fun, we gave them pink target frames to help focus their point of fire. The students moved from rifle to rifle, growing more and more comfortable with each new experience.

Before we knew it, it was time for lunch.

Foggy morning start to a Women on Target class at the Monumental Rifle and Pistol Club in Maryland After our afternoon meal, the ladies who were comfortable enough and interested enough earned the opportunity to sit behind the trigger of a higher caliber rifle. Those who declined to take the long range plunge stayed with the regular rifles for fun with reactive targets like charcoal and the colorful peeps marshmallows.

Everyone who participated, including the first timers, had great fun. Each walk away with knowledge, skill and an excitement to come back and shoot again!

NRA's Women on Target Instructional Shooting Clinics are specifically tailored for first time female shooters. We'll teach you how to shoot, how be safe and how to have fun.
