Revisiting The Citadel's big day as South Carolina's military college comes out on top
Columbus, Georgia - Yesterday's Standard Pistol Championship saw The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, make a strong bid to grab this year's Team Aggregate Championship belt.
By winning Standard Pistol with a score of 2132, The Citadel bested West Point by eighteen points and the Naval Academy by thirty. If they follow up that performance with a similar showing in Open Ait Pistol, there's every chance The Citadel will be known as the NRA's 2013's overall champ.
The match is shot with standard pistols (also known as sport pistols) in .22 LR (Long Rifle). Restrictions on these pistols include a minimum capacity of five rounds, open sights and restrictions on grip design.
Standard Pistol Championship competitors come to the line and shoot three rapid fire 20-shot stages from 25 meters. Each stage is further broken down into four series of five shots.
The whole thing is run on timers, so shooters have added pressure to get their shots off in a certain amount of time. Starting off easy, the first stage's series have 150 second time limits. After that it gets a little tougher. Competitors only have 20 seconds per series in the second stage. Finally the third stage's series must each be shot within 10 seconds.
There are no finals in Standard Pistol, so your placement after the 60 shots is final.
