Area shooters gather for Pine Tree State pistol bragging rights
The 2013 NRA Competitive Shooting Season is well underway. You knew that, right?
Blue Hill, Maine
Just last week, for example, the Blue Hill Rifle and Pistol Club welcomed shooters in for the Maine State Indoor Pistol Sectionals. With an exclusive report on the match is Sectional competitor Ken Kral:
- Blue Hill Rifle & Pistol Club hosted the Maine State Indoor Pistol Sectional on February 3, 2013. The assembled shooters, including five members of Blue Hill RPC and seven from Scarborough Fish & Game, competed in a standard 900 match. Ken Saunders, a regular attendee of the NRA National Rifle & Pistol Matches at Camp Perry
for years, organized the match and called for the first relay at 9am.
Shooters started the 900 match with a round of slow fire. Next came a National Match Course followed by the timed and rapid fire segments. In total, 90 rounds were shot for a possible perfect score of 900.
Shooters received a three minute prep period before the line called "Ready". Shooting distance for this indoor competition was 50' with targets are turned via computerized timer.
The second relay finished shortly before 12:30pm. During the break, shooters were treated to a lunch of lobster mac & cheese, salad, fresh baked cookies and brownies prepared by a dedicated kitchen crew. There was also time to score targets and, for some very dedicated bullseye shooters, make the two and a half hour trip back to Scarborough and points south.
When all was said and done, it was time to recognize the top three shooters of the day. Finishing in first was Ken Saunders with a score of 849. Three points behind was Larry Carter in second and Darin Gray in third with a 801. I can't seem to recall my final scores :) No matter where I finished, it was a privilege to share the line (and day) with Ken Saunders and Larry Carter, of Larry's Guns. And if you make it out to the National Matches at Camp Perry, you might find the two shooting for team Ultradot. If you see them there for the team matches, be sure to say hello.
Blue Hill RPC is hosting another 900 match on March 3rd, 2013. Chili is on the menu and everyone is welcome. For more information on our March 900 Match, check out the Blue Hill Rifle and Pistol Club website at bluehillrpc.org.
Thanks for the update Ken!
