2012 NCAA national champions begin the new season at No. 1
After unseating the University of Kentucky for their second National Championship in three years, Texas Christian University is starting the 2012-2013 season at the head of the coaches poll. This is not uncommon for a team returning the majority of their players from the previous year. The Horned Frogs are bringing back four of the five shooters - including Olympian Sarah Scherer - that made up last year's winning team.
TCU has high hopes for a back-to-back performance. It's a definite possibility, but the road won't be easy. No. 2 ranked Kentucky only lost to the Horned Frogs by 15 points and are eager to have another chance at a title. The Wildcats are also returning all but one shooter this year and it will be interesting to see how each team's rosters have progressed since last season.
West Virginia and Alaska-Fairbanks, ranked Nos. 3 and 4 respectively are always a threat. These two teams have extremely storied histories in NCAA Rifle and hold 24 titles between each other over the championship's 32 year history - West Virginia with 14 and Alaska-Fairbanks ten.
Rifle seasons are starting back up all around the country and will culminate once again at Ohio State University for the National Championship this March. Who will take it all in the 2012-2013 season? We'll be following closely.
