Randal Simmons was the first member of LAPD's SWAT team to be killed in the line of duty in its 40-year history. He left behind an inspirational life and legacy of those he tried to protect and serve. Here's what some of his fellow officers and citizens had to say about him:

"You draw a picture of a SWAT guy and it's Randy Simmons."

"He'd set up on the basketball court area and that's where the gangs were. They were trying to play basketball, throwing up their gang signs, and Randy is on the other side trying to minister."

"Because of Officer Simmons, my son wants to become a Police Officer."
