Fairfax, Virginia - These days, you never know what Glen Hoyer is going to bring into the office. As the Director of NRA's Law Enforcement Division, he's apt to carry around a variety of knick knacks as they gear up for this year's National Police Shooting Championships (NPSC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico; recently donated guns, waterproof notebooks, tactical knives and the new NPSC challenge coin.

Challenge coins have long been a military/law enforcement tradition. The challenge works in one of two ways — you can either challenge members of your same unit/department/association or challenge those in your profession. If you challenge a member of your department, then the question is whether or not a coin can be produced. If you challenge a member of your profession, then the question is who holds a coin from the highest ranking member of the profession.

Manufactured for Glen and his staff by the firm of Smith & Warren (no, not Smith & Wesson — we're talking coins not pistols here), the coin comes with the NRA Law Enforcement insignia on one side and the 2012 NPSC logo on the other. And they are, as Glen likes to say, priceless. But that's only because you can't buy them.

No, if you want one of these babies then you're going to have to make a trip out to Albuquerque, New Mexico. For the only people allowed to lay their hands on these new coins are those who compete in the National Police Shooting Championships.

"It's one of those things we do for our competitors," said Hoyer. "We provide them with a world class competition to test their skills, the breathtaking views of Albuquerque to enjoy during the match, a prize table filled with firearms and this year one heck of a challenge coin."

The 2012 National Police Shooting Championships will run from September 16th through 20th at the Shooting Range Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. All law enforcement officers, including military and private security personnel, are encouraged to come out west and give it a go.
