2012 NRA Championships Columbus, Georgia – There's a whole different brand of March Madness being played out in Georgia.

On the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's hometown range, Thursday played host to the final phase of the NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships — smallbore.

Although heading into the finals of the team competition with a 69 point lead, Michigan State still had some work to do. A cross-fire, miss-fire or sudden cross breeze could open the door for looming rivals such as Penn State or cross town foes from the University of Michigan to swoop in at the last second. What they needed was another strong performance from shooters like Tyler Luce and the Peck brothers if they were going to win the 2012 NRA Smallbore Rifle Championship.

Settled in on the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's Pool Complex, the Spartan shooters delivered just that. Not only did they snatch the smallbore ribbon with a 2172, but that performance was enough to give them the overall Intercollegiate Rifle title with a final score of 4457 — 96 points better the second place Nittany Lions.

But there was more glory to be had for Michigan State. First string shooter Amos Peck already added an individual air rifle title on the previous day. Besting fellow Spartan by more than ten points, Peck was sure to have an easy go of it during smallbore. A smallbore title would also place the Overall Intercollegiate Rifle title in Peck's hands. That idea didn't sit well with University of Michigan's Anne Sullivan.

A first rate rifle shooter herself, the Wolverine battled back and forth with Peck throughout the match. With one shot to go, Sullivan still sat within sight of the smallbore crown. But Peck would not let go.

Finishing the day with total of 559, Michigan States' Amos Peck secured his school's claim to the overall 2012 NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Championship with a final aggregate score of 4,457.

Their sweep complete, Michigan State went off to celebrate. Later this evening the awards ceremony, and official crowning, will take place. There, Michigan State will walk the stage and be return to the Great Lake State with an armful of trophies.
