Albuquerque, New Mexico - Having the right off-duty firearm is a necessity for every law enforcement officer. For 2011 National Police Shooting Championships winner Robert Vadasz it's a Springfield Armory Ultra Compact 1911. Not only does is serve as protection, but as a tool in his collection of firearms used to win the 2011 title. After this year's competition, we sat down with Vadasz to talk about his off-duty 1911.

"Springfield Ultra Compact. They built this one last year and it's as tight of an off-duty gun as I've ever shot."

His firearm of choice for this year's Off-Duty Sidearm Championship (48 shots at three, seven, fifteen and twenty-five yards), it was also his change in preparation that ensured an Off-Duty victory.

"I never put a lot of time into that match because it was more or less a match where you tried to keep your aggregate up," Vadasz explained. "This year I actually practiced with this gun, got the sights set up the way that I needed them. I was able to clean it here this year and win the match."

Shooting a perfect 480 with 38Xs was enough to win the match, but not enough to keep a fellow Border Patrol agent from needling Vadasz.

"Yea, you shot a 480 and took my title."

"That's right, I was ale to clean it here this year and take Art Velez's title," Vadasz replied with a grin. "That's V-E-L-E-Z."
