Named for the late Columbus, Ohio, police officer, shooting champion, and NRA Director, the Jeanne E. Bray Memorial Scholarship program offers college scholarships of up to $1,000 per semester (up to $2,000 per year for a maximum of four years) to dependent children of any public law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty who was an NRA member at the time of death, and to dependent children of any current or retired law enforcement officers who are living and have current NRA membership.
Pictured at right, Mrs. Bray became a Life Member in 1967 and was elected to the NRA Board of Directors in 1984. She served on the Clubs and Associations, Nominating, Public Affairs, and Women's Policy Committees. However, her work for NRA went beyond the boardroom.
In 1960, Mrs. Bray was sworn into the Columbus Division of Police. Sixteen years later, she became the first female officer to participate in the detective bureau training program, and the following year she became a detective trainee. Moreover, she became the first women assigned to the burglary squad, and was a homicide detective at the time of her death. She compiled more than 500 letters of commendation and appreciation during nearly three decades of service in law enforcement.
Mrs. Bray was also an accomplished pistol shooter. She was the first female officer to earn the NRA Police Marksmanship "Distinguished" bar. Mrs. Bray won the National Women's Police Combat Pistol Championship five times from 1962-67, and she competitively maintained a spot on the Columbus police pistol team during those years.
