Clemson, South Carolina -
The final day of the 2011 NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships saw no shots fired. Already resolved the day before, all that remained was the awards ceremony and announcement of the 2011 NRA National Club All-Star Teams.
First off Coach John Cummings from Clemson University and Coach William Smith from The Citadel were presented with awards thanking them for being gracious hosts to this year's championships.
The smallbore championship's awards were handed out first with the help of Mike Krei, Director of the NRA's Competitive Shooting Division. Michigan State University's Clayton Peck took the gold in individual smallbore thanks to his 570 and steady aim. In the smallbore team standings, Penn State's combined effort brought them a 2142, putting them at the top spot over second place Michigan State University's 2132.
Following smallbore, NRA Board Member Edie Fleeman came up to help with the air rifle awards. Coming back up to the podium to receive another trophy was Clayton Peck, whose 582 got him the air rifle gold as well. Host school Clemson University, focused and clearly well-practiced, successfully defended their title from last year by winning the team air rifle trophy again - this year with a 2218.
NRA Board Member and former football star Dave Butz towered over the recipients of the overall awards, which he helped present. Clayton Peck, a lock to take the individual aggregate by winning both the smallbore and air rifle championships, finished with a total of 1152. Penn State, with a first place finish in smallbore and runner up in air rifle, ended the championships with a team aggregate of 4,326. Although they could not overcome Clemson in air rifle, I'm sure they were fine when they came up to accept the team aggregate trophy as a consolation.
Last but not least, NRA's Tori Croft had one last group of awards to announce. The NRA National Club All-Star Teams are the club version of the well-known NRA All-American Teams which are announced at the NCAA Rifle Championships.
