The awards ceremony for the 2011 NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships was held at the National Civil War Naval Museum At Port Columbus. Even among all the battlefields in the south, Port Columbus is home to some of the most fascinating exhibits from the American Civil War.

After a dinner catered by a local BBQ restaurant, Tori Croft, National Manager of the Collegiate & Schools Program, took to the podium to introduce guest speaker Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Hodne, commander of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit. LTC Hodne gave a great speech to the shooters, many of whom were future servicemen and servicewomen, about the importance of the leadership qualities they display when shooting and how they apply to the real world. Much to the lieutenant colonel's humorous chagrin of being in a naval museum, his words were sure to have a lasting impression on those in the audience.

Once finished, it was time to present the championship's awards and announce the 2011 NRA Collegiate All-Americans in pistol. Nick Mowrer of Pikes Peak Community College, who you are sure to hear more about over the next few years, swept the three individual championships this year and practically ran away with the individual aggregate with a 1695. On the women's side, Heather Deppe may not have won either of the women's championships, but she shot consistently enough to finish high both times and capture the women's individual aggregate with a 933.

On the team front, the United States Military Academy took two of the three team championships and finished with an aggregate of 6357, placing them in first among everyone else. The women's United States Naval Academy team locked down the two women's championships and coasted into first with a total aggregate of 2712.

Lastly, it was time to announce the 2011 NRA Collegiate All-American pistol shooters.

The All-American award, created by the NRA in 1936, honors top collegiate shooters in the rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines. Winners of the prestigious All-American award are selected by NRA’s Collegiate Programs Committee. The selection committee members are well-known in the competitive shooting community and some of the committee members are former All-Americans, have served as coaches of All-Americans, or both. The program is committed to recognizing and honoring collegians who have performed remarkable shooting feats during a shooting season while demonstrating exceptional leadership and character.

After the final award for the night had been handed out, the Port Columbus museum staff led the banquet outside for a special presentation, the firing of a Confederate Brooke Rifle. The gun, built in 1865 at the Confederate Navy Works in Selma, Alabama, was brought to the Confederate Navy Shipyard in Columbus for use on the CSS Jackson and now resides as a part of the museum's collection. With a thunderous noise the gun capped off the 2011 championships. Until next year.
