Today marked the first day of competition in the 2011 NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships. Teams checked in and practiced Tuesday and Wednesday, before gathering for a welcome reception hosted by NRA's own Tori Croft on Wednesday evening.

The Free Pistol Championship began at 9:00 am between the United States Military Academy, Ohio State, United States Naval Academy, Citadel, United States Coast Guard Academy, Texas A&M, MIT, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Michigan State and Utah teams at the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's 25 meter range.

Course of fire for the match was 60 shots, at five shots per target, over two hours.

After cease fire was called, Ohio State University was in sole possession of the highest team aggregate with 2022 and became the 2011 Free Pistol champions.

The top eight shooters from free pistol, Justin Carlton, Chris Hudock, Stephen Lutz, Nick Mowrer, Benjamin Poth, Matthew Pueppke, Blake Reburn and Douglas Vogel faced off for ten more shots in the finals to determine this year's individual champion.

With a final total of 642.0, Nick Mowrer of Pikes Peak Community College came away the 2011 Free Pistol Individual title. His teammate, Stephen Lutz, had the highest score in the final with a 93.4, however it was not enough to overcome Nick, who entered the finals with a 550 - ten points ahead of the next closest shooter.
