Back in November, we encouraged young pistol shooters to register for the 4th Annual NRA Bullseye Pistol Competition Junior Shooting Camp. Here’s a report on the event courtesy of Jim Hagearty, Coach of the Illinois Junior Precision Shooters. This event was also registered as an NRA Day event through the Youth Programs Department:

Shooters and coaches from the 4th Annual NRA Bullseye Pistol Competition Junior Shooting Camp

Streator, Illinois - SFC Eric Daniels, United States Army (Ret.), a former member of the Army Marksmanship Unit’s Service Pistol team, was the lead instructor for the 4th Annual NRA Bullseye Pistol Competition Junior Shooting Camp, sponsored by the Illinois Junior Precision Shooters - Precision Pistol and hosted by the Sandy Ford Sportsman’s Club in Streator from December 27th through the 29th.

12 young adults, most NRA classified and experienced bullseye shooters, spent three days with Eric Daniels building their skills to move to the next level in competition. This is the second time IJPS has had the privilege to study under Eric. In March 2009, the team traveled to Georgia for the Fort Benning Pairs Pistol Shooting Camp. Our coaching staff credits Eric Daniels for providing a solid base for our juniors to become exceptional young competitive marksmen.

The junior shooters, age 9 to 18, started each day with an NRA-approved .22 caliber “900” match. After the match, SFC Daniels reviewed their performance and provided individualized commentary of the strengths and weaknesses he observed.

Individual “shot plans” were either reviewed, adjusted as necessary, or created to serve as a foundation for the skill drills that were performed each day of the camp. Structure, focus, and proper execution of the basics…. Score improvements were gratifying to the shooters and their coaching staff. Nine members of the IJPS coaching staff benefitted from Eric Daniels’ teaching style, instructional presentations, and critiques.

Our next Bullseye Competition Camp is scheduled for June 13-15, 2011 at Darnall’s Gun Works and Ranges in Bloomington, Illinois. For more information on these camps or the Illinois Junior Precision Shooters, contact Jim Hagearty at 630-858-4598 or Illinois Junior Precision Shooters - Precision Pistol was established in 2004 as an NRA Junior Affiliated Club that identifies and trains youth shooters to become highly accomplished bullseye pistol athletes. New candidates are always welcome.
