Michigan City, Indiana -
While NRAblog was enjoying the Professional Outdoor Media Association's annual conference in La Porte, Indiana, we had time for a special visit: to an NRA affiliated shooting club.
The Michigan City Rifle Club is located in – you guessed it – Michigan City. Physically located in Indiana, members tell us they have fellow members who make the drive from Chicago, Illinois. The club has more than one hundred members and is 100% NRA.
Lynnette Smith and her 5-year-old son, Wesley, were on hand when NRAblog stopped by. Smith says her father took her hunting around age 14. "Our family has no boys," she explained. "I was the oldest girl, so I got to go."
Smith and her husband are big volunteers. They help with 4-H and also initiated a PPC league at the Michigan City club. "We're really involved here," she said. "It's a great place to be."
"People will nearly knock each other over trying to share their gun with you," she said.
Betsy Fleek and Mark Schoonaert were also at the club when we stopped by. "What got us shooting was a comment while we were in the car one day," Schoonaert said. "Betsy said, 'we need a hobby we can do together. What about shooting?'"
The couple say they shoot recreationally but understand many of their fellow club members have a self-defense motivation for sharpening their skills.
"It's like a family here," Fleek added. "We're comfortable coming here alone or with a larger group."
The club is conveniently located on Highway 20, one half mile east of I-94. Local folk interested in joining are encouraged to drop by. Full Membership allows you Keycard Access to the club 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. "That's definitely one of our perks," Schoonaert said.
The club boasts an indoor range attached to its main clubhouse. Its Outdoor Range offers a 50 position covered firing line with target placement possibilities at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. At the covered firing line you will also find another meeting room and indoor restroom facilities. For more information on this group, read their newsletter here.
