Nathan Switzer, an 18-year-old from Newport News has earned the top honor along with an award of $5,000 in this year’s OAYA selection. Nathan is a member of the Norfolk County Junior Rifle & Pistol Club, and is affiliated with the Virginia Shooting Sports Association. Switzer competes in both air rifle and air pistol and is more often then not at the top of the leader board. It is not just his skill that has earned him this award, but his dedication to and love of the shooting sports.
Switzer has attended a variety of improvement camps such as the 2008 Junior Olympic Development Camp for pistol in Colorado Springs, Colorado and the NRA Junior Pistol Camp at Camp Perry, Ohio in 2009 where he also competed in the NRA National Junior Air Gun Championship. Nathan was a participant and volunteer during USA Shooting’s National Junior Olympic Championship and the NRA National Junior Air Gun Championship & Training Summit in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2010. He was also a volunteer during the 30th Annual NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships held at Fort Benning, Georgia in 2010, photographing the event.
Switzer is a Double Distinguished Expert in both smallbore rifle and international air rifle and had the opportunity to attend the NRA Youth Educational Summit (YES) in Washington D.C. this year. With all his activities in the shooting sports community, Nathan still finds the time to actively volunteer within his church group, play the cello, develop as a student pilot and maintain a 4.0 GPA in his studies.
