Jan Raab, the Competitive Shooting Division's National Manager for High Power Rifle Programs, reports in from the Spirit of America Fullbore National Matches:
The day after the Remembering the Brave ceremony, I drove to Raton, New Mexico, for the Spirit of America (SOA) Fullbore National Matches. The NRA Whittington Center provided a backdrop for this competition, which began on Sunday, September 12, 2010.
111 competitors participated: 67 Fullbore target rifle shooters and 44 F-Class competitors, including 31 F-Open and 13 F-TR shooters. There were some new faces on the line this year. A group of young shooters from the Young Eagles, US National Team competed, along with three Marines from the Marine Corps Rifle Team in Quantico, VA.
On Day One, competitors each fired 10 shots for record at 300, 500, and 600 yards for the McGee Stocks Trophy. The shooters pair fire, with two shooters "on the mound." One person fires a round and the other shooter scores the shot. Then the second shooter fires a shot within 45 seonds from the time the previous score is accepted. Trudie Fay was match winner firing 300-25x. The F-Open winner was Ryan Pierce with 300-19x and F-TR was won by Michelle Gallagher firing 294-12x.
The shooters then moved back to the 900 yard line to fire the R 'n R Design Trophy. Trudie shot another clean score of 150-8x. She was match winner for Sunday's aggregate, firing 450-33x to win the Camaraderie Trophy. Michael Storer was second with 448-28x and Nancy Tompkins finished third firing 448-22x. Ryan Pierce fired 450-24x to win the F-Open category and Brian Whalen won the F-TR aggregate with 433-17x.
On Day Two, six 8-man teams and three 4-man teams fired the Raton 8-Man Team Match. In some cases, teams did not have 8 firing members, so the match sponsor allowed 4-man teams to fire. Individuals without a team enjoyed a day off to relax or go sightseeing. Team members each fired 10 shots at 300, 600, 900 and 1000 yards.
The United States Rifle Team fired a winning score of 3151-163x. Firing members were Norm Crawford, Trudie Fay, Kent Reeve, Wayne Forshee, Boyd Goldsby, Jon Rhynard, Noma Mayo and Johnie Franklin.
