The Central Adirondack Friends of NRA committee in Hoffmeister, New York, are the winners of the Friends of NRA Facebook contest held at the beginning of the month.
The idea behind the contest was to get more volunteers and supporters involved with Friends of NRA on social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. Friends of NRA saw nearly 70 committees participate in the week-long contest.
“Utilizing social networks is a great way to quickly and easily coordinate events,” said Jeremy Greene, Event Services Manager. “With contests like this, Friends of NRA hopes to introduce its supporters to the advantages of these services.”
The rules of the contest were simple:
- “Like” the Friends of NRA on their Facebook Fan Page.
- Find the post: "Comment here with your name and committee to enter the Friends of NRA Facebook Contest!"
- Post a comment with your name and committee.
At the end of the week, the committee with the most posts would be the winner.
For having the most posts, the Central Adirondack Friends of NRA received a Special Edition Dick Kirby Turkey Call, 1 of 250, to auction off at their upcoming banquet. Committee member Paul Shaw was the critical element in its win, mobilizing friends and supporters to participate.
“He is such a motivated volunteer, the spark plug of the committee,” said Jay Rusnock, NRA Field Representative for Upper New York. “If anyone could win this competition it would be him.”
Shaw is no stranger to making his committee run smoother with technology. “When we started the committee in 2004 we were sending out invitations by mail. We realized we were wasting a lot of money and time so we started collecting names and utilizing a database,” he said. “We use the Internet and emails to get our word out and we’ve been very successful. You have to seize the power of the Internet.”
Central Adirondack’s Friends of NRA banquet will take place September 18, 2010, at the Morehouse Recreation Center in Hoffmeister, New York at 5:30 PM. Visit their website to buy a ticket or contact Dave Knapp at (518) 548-8550 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
