Silver State Shooting Sports Association (SSSSA) is an NRA-affiliated club offering a variety of NRA programs to members and the public. Club President Dolores McNamara shared the following information on how SSSSA gets new people involved, particularly youth:
Our organization, the Silver State Shooting Sports Association, has trained more than 700 new junior shooters in the past seven years. We work with the Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts, Civil Air Patrol cadets, ROTC and JROTC. These organizations have responded very well to our youth shooting programs and are regular participants. The youth are enthusiastically earning their patches, rockers and medals in the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. SSSSA is the only shooting organization in our area actively and successfully conducting the rifle, pistol and shotgun programs we offer. We also recruit new youth shooters from all the Southern Nevada gun shows. Our youth programs enjoy the support of parents, too. Some of our young shooters have been with us for years. Many have progressed all the way to the Distinguished Expert awards. One of our shooters was invited to the “Winter Nationals” and has the potential of going to the Olympics in 2012. We are looking at possibly two other shooters for the Olympics and one for the Special Olympics.
The support NRA offers SSSSA to obtain the materials needed to continue to offer the Junior Shooting Development Program is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Many of our youth are home schooled and this gives them the chance to socialize in a positive environment with other youth. Many friendships have evolved from our programs. We thank the NRA Foundation for their Friends of NRA banquets that allow us to obtain firearms and equipment.
Many of our young shooters who have moved away still keep in touch. It is a joy to have personally touched so many lives. Through our NRA backed programs, we have been able to teach and foster respect and courtesy among our youth. The first paragraph in our By-laws says it all: “This organization is organized exclusively for educational purposes. The objective of this organization shall be the encouragement of organized rifle, pistol and shotgun marksmanship with a view toward, education, good knowledge and furthermore safe handling and proper care of firearms, and to create a public sentiment for the encouragement of organized rifle, pistol and shotgun practice both as a sport and as a necessary means of defense. It shall be our further objective and purpose to forward the development of those characteristics of honesty, good fellowship, self-discipline, team-play and self-reliance, which are the essentials of good sportsmanship and the foundation of true patriotism."
We also offer NRA Certified Instructor Classes and Range Safety Officer Classes to involve more people in our sport. Mike Murray and Ron Drake, who are NRA Training Counselors, train our Certified Instructors. Even now, we have five Certified Instructors who want to become Training Counselors.
We are expanding our program to include Women On Target® and Refuse To Be A Victim® now that the new Clark County Shooting Park is open. We also have many adults asking us to do trainings in self-defense and basic pistol & rifle shooting. In addition, we have been asked to introduce shooting to two 4-H Clubs. Two high schools are also coming to us to add shooting to their ROTC programs.
