Two Linganore students earn spots on national rifle team
Two Linganore High School students with a passion for shooting earned two of the four spots on a national championship rifle shooting team.
John White and Daniel Bassett ranked first and third, respectively, in the National Rifle Association state championship March 20. The two seniors will team up with two students from Patuxent High School in Lusby to represent Maryland in the late June competition in Albuquerque, N.M.
"I never thought I'd get to this level," White said. "When I joined, if you look back at my scores, I was pretty awful. I did pretty bad."
But White and Bassett, who joined the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program and its rifle team in ninth grade, brought their rifles and gear home over summer breaks to keep working and improving. Their dedication paid off, said Henry Lane, the NJROTC commander and rifle team coach.
"These two in particular, and John especially, have really gotten good this year," he said. "They just keep getting better, so I'm really excited about this. And I think the (national championship) team with the two of these guys has a good chance of maybe finishing in the top five, so I'm anxious to see how that ends."
