There are many sights to see here at Camp Perry. Tanks and Helicopters on the main drag, 200-year old cannons in front of base headquarters, and a range for air guns, smallbore, and high power. But what most people never see is where those who make the NRA National Shooting Championships go perform their miracles.
Near the top of the base is an unassuming building surrounded by gravel and fence. Inside are Joe and the kids. They are the hardy souls who do the dirty work. The building, moving, and cleaning while the rest of us are either watching and shooting. During my visit there, it was the collection of High Power Rifle Targets that made the biggest impression.
Stacked end to end are the six by six targets those on the range fire upon. Piled floor to ceiling are rows upon rows of the target boards. A welcome sight to some and a menacing heckler to others, Joe and the kids begin work on the target collection early in the year. Inspecting the cardboard, checking the orange strings that bind targets to pulleys, and pasting sheets to their backboard.
There are other pieces of the Camp Perry Championships around the facility too - target boxes for smallbore, stands for pistol and an assortment of tools to make sure everything stays in the right place at the right time.
Around back, the sounds of another project echos through an open door. A quick trip outside reveals the obvious ... more High Power targets. There are never enough.
