The WOT clinic was held on May 31, 2009 at the Oakdale Gun Club in Lake Elmo, MN, which is approximately 10 miles east of downtown St. Paul.
The clinic started at 11 a.m. with a short orientation and safety briefing. The ladies were divided into 4 groups and were asked to rotate stations every 45 minutes.
The 25-yard range was used for handgun shooting with portable target stands placed at about 20 ft. Participants had the opportunity to shoot both revolver and semi automatic pistols in .22, .38, and 9mm calibers. A variety of instructor supplied handguns were available.
The 50 yard range was used for rifle shooting with ½ the range for .22 and the other side for .223. The .22 cal side used portable target stands at approximately 40 ft with the 223 side utilizing the full 50 yds. The rifles used in both calibers were bolt and semi auto actions both with open sight and optics.
The trap range was used for shotgun with the participants using 20 ga shotguns and shooting from directly behind the bird house. Additionally the thrower was set to only throw straight away birds to increase the likelihood of hits.
The last of the 4 stations was the display area set up in the classroom. There were all action types represented in long guns as well as handguns. Dummy ammunition and spent projectiles were also present. Individual instructors were asked to bring certain firearms and also any that they thought would be interesting. We actually ran out of room and could not display everything that was brought. There were a minimum of 2 instructors in the classroom at all times for answering questions. Additionally there was an area set aside with lazer ed rifles where the ladies could practice sight alignment.
The last area available to participants and instructors was the BBQ. The “chef” had burgers, hotdogs, and the trimmings available from 1-3 p.m. so that similar to a fair the folks could stop and eat at anytime. Bottled water, coffee, and lemonade were available throughout the day.
The instructors came from as far as 90 miles away and were some of the finest local instructors available with out a doubt. (Complete roster is copied below.)
Participants had the option to shoot up to 10 shots in each caliber handgun and rifle with the same on trap. Up to 25 rds of 22 caliber were available to each participants for rifle and handgun.
Not surprising the .223 rifle station used the most ammunition -- almost 500 rounds!
Thanks, Tom, for offering your time to the women of Minnesota and for letting NRAblog report on your event. Keep us posted on your future events as they are sure to be as successful as this one.
