Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar affirmed March 6th the decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove gray wolves from the list of threatened and endangered species in the western Great Lakes and the northern Rocky Mountain states of Idaho and Montana and parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Wolves will remain a protected species in Wyoming.

Hunters, livestock owners and wildlife managers in the affected states have clamored for years for the right to manage wolves themselves, yet animal rights groups had succeeded in stalling decisions that would allow it. U.S. Fish and Wildlife delisted wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains March 2008 and the western Great Lakes in February 2007. But a coalition of animal rights’ organizations raised objections in court and got the delistings suspended. Defenders of Wildlife led lawsuits in the northern Rocky Mountain case and the Humane Society of the United States in the Great Lakes.
