Year's top collegiate pistol shooters named for NRA All American awards

NRA All-American Free Pistol First Team

Columbus, Georgia - Following the awards for this year's NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships, the NRA announced the rosters of its annual All American pistol teams.

Created in 1936, the All American award honors collegiate shooters in the rifle, pistol, and shotgun disciplines. Rifle All Americans were announced just recently at the NCAA Rifle Championships and the Shotgun All Americans will be announced at the ACUI Clay Target Championships next week.

Columbus, Ohio - Absent and unable to defend their national title, the void left by Michigan State University ensured both team and individual champions would be brand new at this year's NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships

But though there were more than enough volunteers to step up and wear the crowns, only a select few shooters out of the dozens present would get the chance.

Columbus, Georgia - On a markedly foggy day on Fort Benning, the competitors of the 2013 NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships gathered for the second half of their tournament.

Assembling at the US Army Marksmanship Unit's 50 meter range, they unpacked their guns and prepared for the Smallbore Championship. The match is fired from three positions - prone, standing and kneeling - divided evenly into strings of 20 shots per position.

Columbus, Georgia - Today's Air Rifle title at the NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships started out like any other. After their preparation period, 54 shooters looked ten meters down range at their targets and began the 60-shot match. A match that would determine both the team and individual champion.

Competitors received an hour and forty-five minutes to shoot their pellets in six strings of ten shots. Some finished quickly, others took their time.

Clemson University, winners of the 2010 and 2011 Air Rifle titles, posted a 2201 out of 2400 and appeared to be on their way to a third victory, but the match was not quite over.

NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships' second, and deciding, women's title

Columbus, Georgia - The fourth of the NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championship's five titles is Women's Sport Pistol.

Shot Wednesday, it was the second and final Women's championship. Here the United States Naval Academy clenched their Women's National Team title while West Point's Heather Deppe earned this year's individual crown.

Team Aggregate goes to the U.S. Military Academy and Cadet Stephen Bowden of The Citadel wins Individual

Columbus, Georgia - After three grueling days of battling back-and-forth with service academy rival Navy, the Black Knights of West Point pulled ahead to capture this year's aggregate to become the National NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Champions of 2013.

The aggregate is comprised of scores from three separate matches; the Free Pistol, Standard Pistol and Open Air Pistol championships. Scoring 2004, 2114 and 2208 respectively, the Army cadets tallied a final total of 6326 pointsout of a possible 7200.

Columbus, Georgia - Yesterday's Standard Pistol Championship saw The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, make a strong bid to grab this year's Team Aggregate Championship belt.

By winning Standard Pistol with a score of 2132, The Citadel bested West Point by eighteen points and the Naval Academy by thirty. If they follow up that performance with a similar showing in Open Ait Pistol, there's every chance The Citadel will be known as the NRA's 2013's overall champ.

Women's Air Pistol shooter takes aim at the NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships

Columbus, Georgia - While the NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships' final match plays out, here are some photos and the top scores from Tuesday's Women's Air Pistol Championship.

Competitors take a standing, unsupported position and, when ready, fire on target from a one handed stance. The shooters' 4.5 mm caliber air guns have fast lock times, producing hardly any recoil and are vacation free. This means shots have very little affect on the shooters, creating minimal overall movement or balance shifts when they fire.

Columbus, Georgia - Competitors returned to the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's 25 meter range yesterday afternoon to take care of some unfinished business. With three of the five NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championship titles already decided, it was time address Women's Sport Pistol — the last of the two women's titles.
