Targets from the Aimpoint boot during SHOT Show's Media Day

Boulder City, Nevada - Officially, the first day of SHOT Show isn’t really the first day of SHOT Show. That’s tomorrow. But for those of us considered to be part of the media (I know, right?), the Show started today. Today at the Boulder City Gun Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

Last minute absent-mindedness can lead to SHOT Show madness in Vegas

Southwest Airlines gate at Reagan National Airport

Alexandria, Virginia - We're all human ... my thanks to the peanut gallery for the audible, "duh". My point being that as human beings we are imperfect by design. Be it by way of driving skills, computer ability, business acumen, or ability to catch a ball, there's something amiss in those primordial architectural plans that allow us to reveal in our imperfections. One of my greatest? I forget. Oh yea, memory.

What would SHOT Show have been like 160 years ago?

SHOT Show 1855 Fairfax, Virginia - Since beginning in 1979, SHOT Show has become one of the premier firearms industry event of the year. Those who are able to attend circle the date on their calendars; those who are unable curse under their breath.

As I was packing up amazing and historic guns for SHOT Show from the NRA Museums, I was led down a path of historical whimsy: what would SHOT Show have been like 160 years ago in 1855?

New guy takes National Firearms Museum on the road to first SHOT Show

View of the Las Vegas strip from the Venetian Hotel

Fairfax, Virginia - When I came to the NRA in January 2014 as the Firearms Specialist, I missed the SHOT Show by a week. (Why I thought they’d send the brand new guy even if I had been there is something I hadn’t thought about!)

At any rate, plans for the 2015 SHOT Show are well underway and it will be my inaugural attendance. Add to that fact that I’m the only NRA Museums staff member going and it could prove to be a baptism by fire.

What goes into planning the NRA Museums’ involvement at SHOT Show, you ask? Well, first and foremost, we have to decide what firearms we’re going to display in the booth. This involves a number of questions, including: what are our themes, what went last year, what are the crowd favorites, and so on.

From the Nevada Department of Wildlife - Wild Game cooking classes coming to Las Vegas

Tony Catalde's bacon wrapped quail at 2012 POMA Top Chef cook offLas Vegas, Nevada - Nevada big game seasons begin in late summer and it is never too early to prepare for a successful hunt. Part of that preparation involves learning how to cook that freezer full of healthy, organic and tasty game meat you will obtain.

For the many hunters and families the learning process begins with a simple question. What do I cook?

To help answer that question, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has partnered with Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Las Vegas to conduct a series of game care and cooking workshops. The workshops will provide answers and options beyond the standard "throw it in a crock pot and cook it" recipes.
