From the Alaska Department of Fish and Game - Predator Control Program Provides Meat for Western Interior Villages

Department of Fish and Game staff conducted a predator control program May 13-27 in Game management Unit 19A designed to increase the number of moose and the harvest of moose in the unit. The program was approved by the Board of Game at the request of local hunters concerned about low moose numbers. It is scheduled to be conducted in 2013 and 2014.

ADF&G Staff members removed a total of 89 bears (84 black bears and 5 grizzlies) in a 530 square mile “Bear Control Focus Area” within Game Management Unit 19A which encompasses nearly 10,000 square miles east of Aniak in western interior Alaska. The Bear Control Focus Area is located south of the Kuskokwim River in what formerly was the best moose hunting area in the Unit.

“Our objective was to reduce black and grizzly bear numbers to as low a level as possible within the Bear Control Focus Area,” said Regional Management Coordinator Roy Nowlin.

From the Alaska Department of Fish & Game - Tier II Hunt Scheduled for Southern Alaska Peninsula Caribou: A Predator Control Success Story

(KING SALMON) – A new Tier II subsistence hunt for Southern Alaska Peninsula (SAP) caribou is scheduled to open this fall in Game Management Subunit 9D. Composed of split fall and winter seasons, Permit Hunt TC506 will run August 1 through September 30 with a bag limit of one bull, and from November 15 through March 31 with a bag limit of one caribou (either sex) for hunters who do not harvest a bull in the fall.

The application period for this season’s hunt will be May 1 through May 31, 2013. Online applications (http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntlicense.main) must be submitted before 5 p.m. on May 31, 2013. Hard-copy applications must be postmarked by May 31 in order for the application to be accepted. To hunt caribou in Subunit 9D, hunters must possess a valid Alaska resident hunting license and the Tier II permit.

Milestone achievement for the winningest team in NCAA Rifle history

Columbus, Ohio - Four years since their last national rifle championship, West Virginia University is bringing the NCAA Rifle title back to Morgantown.

Starting the day at 2316, the Mountaineers had to separate themselves from the pack. Sitting one point behind defending champions Texas Christian University, West Virginia was tied with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and one point ahead of the Kentucky Wildcats. There was little breathing room ... if any.

Zublasing throttles competition in Air Rifle on way to individual title sweep at NCAA Rifle Championship

Columbus, Ohio - Carrying her superior performance into the second day of the NCAA Rifle Championships, West Virginia University's Petra Zublasing completed her sweep of the individual titles with a first place finish in Air Rifle.

Starting the day with a near-perfect 598-48x out of 600, Petra advanced to the finals in first place, four points up on second place Hannah Black from Texas Christian University.

West Virginia poised to take 2013 collegiate rifle title after strong start in Air Rifle Championship

Columbus, Ohio - The close overall standings between teams after yesterday's Smallbore Championship have become a little wider today at the Air Rifle Championship. The final portion of the 2013 NCAA Rifle Championships, today will decide this year's national champion.

With Relay #1's scores in and Relay #2 well underway, each shot gives us a clearer picture of who will walk away a champion.

Texas Christian University moves into lead for team championship

Columbus, Ohio - West Virginia senior Petra Zublasing became this year's smallbore champion at the NCAA Rifle Championships after a hard fought final at Ohio State University's Converse Hall.

Shooting a 589-35x earlier in the Smallbore Championship, Zublasing began the eight-man final just behind University of Kentucky's Henri Junghanel who had edged her with a 589-36x.

Junghanel would only remain in first until points were on the board. As the dust settled from the first shot, Zublasing was ahead by one and her lead over the Kentucky shooter would fluctuate back and forth over the next nine shots until her victory was sealed.

Nanooks hold on in bid for their 11th national championship in NCAA Rifle

Columbus, Ohio - The University of Alaska Nanooks, who finished the regular season at No. 5, are holding on to their lead at the NCAA Rifle Championships at Ohio State. With scores from three of their four shooters accounted for, the Nanooks are sporting a 1731 team score. One of NCAA's dynasty teams, Alaska-Fairbanks has ten titles to their name, the most recent being in 2008.

Just behind them in second is the other dynasty team, West Virginia University, trailing by four with a 1727. Rounding out third is last year's defending champion, Texas Christian University, with a 1723.
