ACUI Championships: Yale's Bulldogs by Lindsey Purdy 26. February 2009 12:24

Yale University has attended the ACUI Championships since the competition's inception, and the team has a strong record. As the only Ivy League school team attending the competition, the Bulldogs bring an element of diversity to a competition usually dominated by schools from the South and the Midwest.

Yale ClayRecently, NRAblog.com sat down with Yale's Tom Migdalski to talk about the Bulldogs and the upcoming ACUI International Clay Target Championships.

When asked what was unique about this year’s competition for his team, Migdalski, who serves as Director of Club Sports at Yale, was quick to point out the team's comprehensive involvement in the 2009 Championships. “This is the first year in a while that we have been able to compete in all five events. The competition falls on our spring break, so we'll be able to be there for the full competition.”

Migdalski’s goal for his team is to place in the top ten again this year. “We are bringing a strong group of shooters,” he said.

As for a particular shooter to watch, we suggest rising freshman Ricky Johnson. Johnson, a native of San Antonio, has been a junior All-American shooter the past two years.

The Women's Wilderness Escape: A first-hand perspective by Lindsey Purdy 14. February 2009 10:51

Past Women’s Wilderness Escape participant Peggy York has “always enjoyed the outdoors.” Peggy, an NRA-certified instructor, has been shooting since she was twelve, and teaches the Becoming an Outdoorswoman program sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. She is also the coordinator for the Texas Outdoors Woman Network of San Antonio.

When this exemplary outdoorswoman was asked why she decided to attend last year’s inaugural Women’s Wilderness Escape, she couldn’t say enough: “When I learned NRA was offering a program of this magnitude for women, I knew I wanted to be a part of the first event! I love to shoot and knew I could learn new tips and techniques, both in my shooting skills and my instructing skills.” She also insisted we share the photographs she took of the event, which are in the above slideshow.

Another aspect of the program Peggy enjoyed was “seeing women gain self-confidence as well as a newfound interest. Women that have traditionally been afraid of firearms are now comfortable and want to learn to become skilled and proficient.”

Peggy said the event couldn't have gone any smoother – a real compliment for an inaugrual event of this magnitude! “The organizers for this event left little room for improvement. I’m glad to have experienced it all!”

The second annual Women’s Wilderness Escape is scheduled for September 24-October 2 at the NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico.

Lindsey Purdy's Basic Pistol class by Lindsey Purdy 10. February 2009 16:23

The NRA offers several Basic Firearm Training Courses for all shooting disciplines through its Education and Training Division. Recently, I had the pleasure of going through an NRA Basic Pistol Course ® with NRA Certified Instructor Chip Lohman.

So what did I learn?

There’s a whole lot more to shooting than pointing a gun and pulling a trigger.

The NRA advocates safe shooting and responsible gun ownership, two ideas which NRA’s Basic Pistol Course® gives new meaning. NRA Certified Instructors not only teach you how to fire your gun – they also teach you about the responsibility that comes with owning a firearm. This includes proper loading techniques, firearm cleaning and maintenance, and range etiquette. The course I took this January was four and a half hours of classroom time with additional time spent at the range. You can see the video of my course completion at the NRA Headquarters Range above.

The overall experience was exhilarating. I highly recommend getting to an NRA class. Firearm safety is an issue to take seriously, and you might as well learn from expert NRA Certified Instructors. As Chip said, it's difficult to "unlearn" bad habits and technique.  Find a NRA Basic Firearm Training Course in your area.

To help you continue with your practice, the NRA offers the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. This program offers ascending levels of distinction based upon your score on a NRA standard target for your particular discipline. Patches and medals are awarded in accordance with your proficiency level after completing a particular course of fire. Learn more about the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program.

NRA Youth Ambassadors: Dillon Jessen + Kevin Brannan by Lindsey Purdy 14. January 2009 14:34
You've already heard about Boy Scout Matt McGroarty's and Venturing John Washburn's entry into the NRA National Youth Shooting Sports Ambassadors (NYSSA) program, so here's a little bit about our other ambassadors and their programs.

Dillon Jessen, based out of Queen Creek, AZ, is a member of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA). Dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship and character, the NHRSA has over 10,000 members in over 40 states as well as Canada and Australia. In addition to shooting, Dillon also excels in steer wrestling.

Kevin Brannan is a member of the Royal Ranger Ministries. With a membership reaching across the United States in over 65 nations around the world, the Royal Rangers modivates the boys spiritually and provides positive Christian role models. Boys are strengthened mentally by an advanced awards-based weekly program. Further, the boys increase their physical prowess by participation in age-specific activities and recreation. The Life of a Royal Ranger includes great outdoor adventures through camping, water activities, hiking, rappelling, and mountain climbing, as well as challenging indoor adventures.

Formerly known as the Youth Advisory Board, the NYSSA offers scholarships, introductions to national shooting sports celebrities, camaraderie, travel, and career opportunities to a representative group of our shooting sports youth from all national youth organizations.

If you know of a 16-20-year-old who is active in your organization's shooting sports program, feels comfortable in front of an audience, and can travel, you are encouraged to contact your shooting sports coordinator (JROTC, 4-H, VFW, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, American Legion, FFA, High School Rodeo, DeMolay, etc.).

If you have questions, please call the NRA's Youth Programs Department at (703) 267-1550.

NRA Youth Ambassador Profile: Matt McGroarty by Lindsey Purdy 13. January 2009 09:25

The Boy Scouts of America, as well as the Venturing program, has greatly impacted the life of our second Youth Ambassador. His name is Matt McGroarty and he currently serves as the President of Western Region Venturing. While there, Matt has earned almost every shooting award possible in the Boy Scouts.

Matt McGroarty His active participation in the shooting sports began very early, and he has pursued this passion to the present day. When asked what it was like to be named a 2009 NRA Youth Ambassador, Matt offered, “The most exciting thing about being selected to be the NRA Youth Ambassador is that the NRA is a strong organization and I am honored to be with an organization that is so dedicated to teaching weapon safety to the youth of this nation for a safer future.”

This week at SHOT Show, Matt will be accompanying his fellow Ambassadors Dillion, Kevin, and John.  When asked what he was most excited for at the show, Matt said, “I am most looking forward to SHOT Show, because I am excited to meet new people who share my love for shooting, while exploring how well the programs of the NRA and the BSA complement each other for the growth and safety of America’s youth.”

So if you see any of our Ambassadors at the Show, take a minute to share a little knowledge with these promising up-and-coming shooters.

NRA Youth Ambassador Profile: John Washburn by Lindsey Purdy 9. January 2009 09:53

NRA Youth Programs sure hit the bullseye with John Washburn! The 2009 National Youth Shooting Sports Ambassador became interested in shooting sports after joining a local archery club at the age of 8.  Since that time,  he has earned his Rifle Merit Badge John Washburnand become quite a proficient handgunner. When asked if he believed that shooting sports were integral to his organization, John offered the following:

"Answering as a Boy Scout and a Venturing officer, I think the core of Scouting is character and leadership development. Participation in shooting sports is a way for a Scout to learn the discipline of practice, to enjoy healthy competition, to learn important safety skills and good sportsmanship, to teach others, and to explore careers that are related to shooting skills."

John, along with his fellow Ambassadors Matt, Dillon, and Kevin, will be visiting SHOT Show next week. "I expect the most exciting parts of SHOT Show to be the fellowship with people who enjoy shooting, and the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and developments in shooting sports," John said.

So if you see them at the Show, take a moment to share a little knowledge with these up and coming shooters.
