Wife gives hubby an AR-15 styled birthday cake at Friends of NRA dinner

An AR-15 Birthday cake with a gadsden flag on the side - photo by Brian Harte A few days ago, Elizabeth Mais dropped us a line from Connecticut. She told us about the wonderful time she had last weekend at a Friends of NRA dinner. But she wanted to do more than just say thanks. She wanted to tell us about a cake.

As luck would have it, the date of the Friends banquet fell on the same day as her husband's birthday. So Elizabeth decided to sieze the opportunity celebrate the NRA, the shooting sports, and Bill's birthday all in one fell swoop. What better way to do that than with frosting?

Everything came together thanks to a little creativity by Elizabeth, Jenny-Lu’s and their AR-15/Gadsden flag cake creation. Here's Elizabeth with the full story:

Plantsville, Connecticut - Last year was my husband Bill’s 50th birthday. Because I was unemployed at the time, I could not afford to give him the party he deserved. This year I wanted it to be special and it was. Bill’s birthday happened to fall on the same day as the Friends of the NRA annual dinner. I thought, how perfect, an evening with good food, great friends, gun raffles, and camaraderie! What could be better than celebrating his birthday with 1300 fellow patriots!

The Bristol Press in Bristol, Connecticut, wrote an article on Camp Perry competitors Claudia and Richard Duksa, pictured below:

Teen has sharp eye for targets, academics

Claudia Duksa is spending her summer vacation doing what she’s good at — small bore rifle shooting.

And the 17 year-old is really good at it. On Tuesday, she and her father, Richard Duksa, will be heading to the national championships at Camp Perry in Ohio.

She got started shooting at age 8, when her father built her a small range in the barn the farm he owns in Southington.

“We’d go down there and practice,” she recalled. “We learned on our own through shooting books, and did just about everything on our own at first. We made up our own schedule and to try to teach ourselves to shoot.”

A few yeas later they joined Bell City Rifle Club in Southington, where she received more advanced instruction and made rapid progress.

“She loves her sport and she stays very focused,” said her father, who still acts as her informal coach.

The Hartford, Connecticut, Cabela’s will host a benefit barbecue for the local Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) program on August 22, 2010. The benefit will be in conjunction with their 2nd biggest sale of the year, The Fall Great Outdoor Day Sale. Cabela’s Retail Events Coordinator Diana Bazzano is in charge of the event. “We chose YHEC to do a benefit because we wanted to do something related to what Cabela’s does, something for fishing or hunting,” said Ms. Bazzano.

Pepsi will be donating drinks and chips to the cause. Carl’s BBQ and Jerk, a local Jamaican barbecue place, will be catering the event. Customers can buy a sandwich, chips, and a soda for only $4.00. For each sandwich sale, $1.00 will be donated to YHEC.

The Youth Hunter Education Challenge is acknowledged as the most widespread youth hunting program in North America. YHEC is the NRA’s “graduate studies” program in outdoor skills and safety training at the state or provincial level. For more information about Cabela’s benefit barbecue, call the store at (860) 290-6200. For more information about the YHEC program, look here.

The Nutmeg Friends of NRA committee knows what they’re doing. Last year, the Connecticut event was the number-one attended Friends of NRA event in the nation with 900 attendees.

This year, NRA Executive Director of General Operations Kayne Robinson was asked to serve as guest speaker at the 2009 event, held this past weekend.

NRA Field Representative Rich D’Alauro says the group has a great chance of claiming number one status again. “We’re looking at a head count of 1,070,” he told NRAblog.
